How to find your face shape from a photo

What actually decides the answer, how to take a photo the reading can use, and why two categories are often close enough to call it either way.

Face shape is a description of visible proportions, not a property you either have or lack. Seven names are in common use — oval, round, square, oblong (rectangle), heart, diamond and triangle — and every face sits somewhere on the continuous space those seven names divide up. Reading yours from a photo means measuring a few relationships and deciding which name they come closest to.

What the reading actually looks at

Five relationships carry almost all of the information. Everything else is detail.

The first is length against width: the distance from hairline to the bottom of the chin, compared to the widest horizontal measurement across the face. When those are close to equal, the face reads as round or square. When length clearly exceeds width, oblong and oval come into range.

The second is which horizontal level is widest — forehead, cheekbones or jaw. A face widest at the cheekbones with a narrower forehead and jaw reads toward diamond. Widest at the forehead and narrowing to the chin reads toward heart. Widest at the jaw reads toward triangle.

The third is the jaw angle: the corner where the jawline turns up toward the ear. A near-right angle with a visible corner reads square. A continuous curve with no identifiable corner reads round.

The fourth is the chin — pointed, rounded, or flat and broad. A pointed chin pulls a reading toward heart or diamond; a broad flat chin pulls it toward square.

The fifth is the hairline. A straight, level hairline widens the apparent forehead. A rounded one or a widow’s peak narrows it, and often moves a reading from square toward heart.

How to take a photo the reading can use

Photo technique changes the answer more than most people expect, because four of those five relationships are horizontal measurements and horizontal measurements are exactly what a camera distorts.

Face the camera squarely. Any rotation foreshortens one side of the face and shortens the apparent width. Any up or down tilt changes the apparent length of the face and the visibility of the jaw corner.

Put the camera at eye height. Held low, it lengthens the jaw and widens it; held high, it enlarges the forehead and hides the jaw corner entirely.

Stand about an arm and a half away — roughly 70 to 90 centimetres — and crop afterwards if you need to. A phone held at arm’s length or closer uses a wide-angle lens at close range, which enlarges whatever is nearest the sensor. The nose and the centre of the face grow, the ears and the jaw corners recede, and the face reads narrower and longer than it is.

Light the face evenly from the front. A window behind the camera works well. Overhead light drops a shadow under the cheekbone and along the jaw, which can invent a corner that is not there or hide one that is.

Tuck hair behind the ears and off the jawline, and keep the whole head in frame including the hairline and the top of the head. Hair falling across the temples is the single most common reason a forehead reads narrow. Remove sunglasses and anything that covers the brow.

Keep a neutral expression with the mouth closed, and turn off any smoothing or reshaping filter. Filters routinely narrow the jaw and enlarge the eyes, which shifts the reading toward heart and diamond.

The mirror and tape method, and why it disappoints

The manual method is to stand at a mirror and measure four numbers with a soft tape or a marker on the glass: forehead width at its widest, cheekbone width across the tops of the cheekbones, jaw width at the corners, and length from hairline to chin. Then you compare them.

It sounds exact and is not, for three reasons. The endpoints are ambiguous — there is no obvious spot where a forehead stops or a cheekbone peaks, and moving your tape a centimetre changes which name wins. Soft tissue moves under a tape, so you can get the answer you were hoping for without noticing you pressed harder on one side. And most people’s four numbers land close to a boundary anyway, where a two-millimetre difference decides between two categories.

A photo has the opposite problem and the opposite advantage. It cannot be pressed or fudged, and every measurement is taken from the same flat image at the same moment, so the relationships between the numbers stay honest even if the absolute scale is unknown. Why two categories are usually close

The seven names are conventions drawn over a continuous distribution. There is no natural border between oval and oblong, only a ratio somewhere around which one label starts to fit better than the other. The same is true of square and round, which differ mainly in the jaw corner, and of heart and diamond, which differ mainly in the forehead.

So a good reading names the closest shape and the runner-up, and says how close the call was. A result of “likely oval, with square as the alternative” is more useful than a confident single word, because it tells you which two sets of styling advice both apply to you. The overlap is the normal case, not a failure of the reading. How it works goes through what the confidence figure is responding to.

What a photo can never settle

A photo is flat, so it loses depth. How far your cheekbones project forward, how sharply the jaw turns in profile, and how much of an apparent width is bone versus soft tissue are all questions a single frontal image cannot answer. They are listed as caveats rather than guessed at.

A photo also cannot tell you what the shape is worth, because it is not worth anything. Face shape is a starting point for choosing lengths, volumes and frame outlines — nothing more. It is not a score and not a verdict.

Finally, weight, expression, age and hair all move the visible proportions over time. A reading is a description of one photo on one day, not a permanent classification. If you take a second photo in different light and get a different runner-up, both readings are probably right.
